Authentic living is kind of like putting on your favorite pair of yoga pants, you know the ones. They’re probably a little worn down, possibly with a coffee spill or two, but they still manage to make you feel so darn good. It's about being comfortable in your own skin, or pants in this case.
It’s about capturing that feeling that you have when you’re home alone, wearing your most comfy jammies, belting out your favorite tune off-key, and embracing that same level of freedom in all aspects of your life ( 1 ). Bear in mind that being true to ourselves is not only liberating, but it also gives a hoot about our mental health and relationships ( 2 ).
Understanding Authentic Living
Authentic living is like a hearty laugh, without reservation and full of sincerity. It's about self-reflection, self-acceptance, and self-expression. Maybe your genuine self is a little loud, a tad chaotic, a devoted cannabis user, or the one whose parenting style is more experiential learning than Pinterest perfect. That's ok my friend, own it!
In essence, authentic living requires you to dig deep, knowing what sparks that magical joy (remember Marie Kondo?), and walks hand in hand with your values and passions.
The Sweet Pie Known as Authentic Living
A slice of authentic living brings along an extra dollop of fulfillment that adds a little more zing and flavor to the sometimes mundane recipe of life.
It introduces you to the version of yourself that is just content and at peace miles away from the constant strive for perfectionism, providing an extra boost of happiness. It’s like finally finding yourself after playing a lifelong game of hide and seek.
Expressing your authentic self can be as freeing as letting loose some pent-up Mom rage on an unsuspecting pillow. It’s like shaking off the weight that's been keeping you anchored, and voila! You find you can float much higher and lighter than ever before.
And of course, let's not forget how it helps in building connections that are genuine and deep, just like that bond shared between moms during a school pick-up line who subtly acknowledge each other's under-eye bags and last-minute ponytails.
Making Authentic Living Your BFF
Being authentic might sound daunting. Much like planning a Mom's night out where you're not just hangout but also the party planner, chauffeur, and peacekeeper. But hey, look at us conquering it one at a time, right?
Here are some simple ways to start:
Self-Reflection - It is like catching up with an old friend, your own self in this case, and discovering new facets over a cup of coffee. What gets you out of bed each day (aside from that tiny human demanding cereal at 6 am, of course)?
Embrace Imperfections - Remember momma, you're just like everyone else in this giant motherhood boat that we're all rowing together—far from perfect. Embrace your unique quirks because those tiny humans aren't after a perfect mom, they're after YOU, their mom.
Setting Healthy Boundaries - Learn to say no, even to that PTA meeting if you have to. Prioritize what brings you joy and say bye-bye to what doesn’t. Self-care over societal expectations, always, and I mean, ALWAYS!
Expressing Authenticity - Open up, be you! No filters necessary. It's time to show off your true colors (cue in Cyndi Lauper's song!).
Support - Look for your tribe, those who not just support but also share your values ( 3 ).
Braving the Winds of Authenticity
Embracing authenticity might require stepping out of your comfort zone. Yes, it can be as nerve-wracking as the first daycare pick-up or shopping on Black Friday. Yes, it might push you towards vulnerability, but hey, remember that there's strength in being vulnerable.
Leave behind the what-ifs and brace yourself for a journey that's rewarding and fulfilling in ways you never imagined. After all, you are a mom, you can handle everything that the world throws at you with grace and a sense of humor (and maybe a bit of wine!).
One Small Step for Moms, One Giant Leap for Mankind
Authentic living not only brings joy and genuineness to your life but also sets an incredible example for those tiny humans looking up to you for guidance. The courage to be yourself is one of the most valuable lessons you can teach your children. Pass on the baton, lead the way, because Mom, you rock!
My friend, it's time to step into your light and let the world see you for who you really are—a beautiful, authentic, perfectly imperfect super mom! Now let your authenticity unleash and give yourself permission to live a life that's uniquely, authentically, and unapologetically yours.
