How to Find Inner Calm and Re-Center Your Day with Deep Breathing and Other Tips

Hello my lovelies! Picture this: You're knee-deep in a whirlwind morning. Lunches have been made, children have been shuttled off to school, and you finally crash onto the couch. Before you can even let out a breath, you remember – there’s unfolded laundry, unanswered emails, and oh my, that appointment you almost forgot. Sounds familiar, right?

Well, today we're not going to dive into the chaotic beauty that is motherhood. Nope. Instead, my dear friends, we're going to talk about something even more crucial. We're going to address the ways in which you can re-find your inner calm amidst all the tumult. The perfect antidote to our fast-paced lives - the art of conscious breathing and other simple practices that can help bring back a sense of stability and tranquility to your day.

The Power of Deep Breathing

Let’s take a deep breath together (something we often forget to do), and dive into the world of deep breathing techniques. Grab a comfy seat, sit upright, and read on (or just breathe along as you read!).

Deep Breathing Techniques

You’ve surely heard of deep breathing, but do you know how to nail it? (It’s actually trickier than one may think!)

1. Diaphragmatic Breathing: The first, known as diaphragmatic breathing , is perfect for beginners. Just inhale deeply through your nose, let your belly rise rather than your chest, and then exhale slowly out your mouth as your belly falls.

2. Box Breathing: Should you be ready for an extra challenge, try box breathing . This is a simple technique that involves inhaling for a count of four, holding it there for a count of four, then exhaling for a count of four, before holding it again for a final count of four. Do this several times and you'll start to feel the shift.

3. 4-7-8 Breathing: The pièce de résistance of the breathing techniques is the 4-7-8 breathing . Just breathe in through your nose for a 4-count, hold your breath for a 7-count, and then exhale slowly through your mouth for an 8-count. Rinse and repeat!

Benefits of Deep Breathing

Apart from making you feel like a Zen-master-in-training, what are the perks of these deep breathing tricks?

1. Reduces stress and anxiety: Deep breathing acts as a superhero that calms your body down, reducing stress hormones and making you feel more at peace.

2. Improves focus and concentration: By increasing oxygen flow to the brain, deep breathing enhances cognitive function. Who knew becoming a taskmaster could be a few breaths away?

3. Lowers blood pressure: Did you know it can also contribute to maintaining a healthier blood pressure by promoting relaxation? Yep, that’s right, deep breathing is your heart's secret best friend.

4. Enhances emotional well-being: Lastly, deep breathing stimulates our body's own feel-good hormones, promoting a more positive mood and overall well-being.

Other Helpful Tips for Re-Centering Your Day

As fabulously effective as deep breathing is, let’s not stop there. Here are a few more tips that can help you keep calm, carry on and reclaim your much-needed peace.

Mindfulness Meditation

Have you ever tried mindfulness? No, I don’t mean mind FULL ness, I mean  mindful-ness. It’s a practice that involves focusing on your breath, sensations in your body, or just observing your thoughts without judgement, like a  blissful little zen cloud floating above.

Physical Activity

Did you know that physical activity helps release tension and boost your mood? So how about throwing some quick yoga stretches, a dance-off, or a peaceful walk into your day? Mini movement breaks are also a great way to keep your mind and body in tune.

Disconnect from Technology

The world won't end if you take a break from screens (shocking, I know). So, how about swapping those social media scrolling hours for reading a good old book, soaking up some nature or treating yourself to your favorite hobby? I promise, that unread email will still be there when you get back.

Practice Gratitude

My personal favorite – gratitude. Taking a moment each day to reflect on things you are grateful for can shift your perspectives and promote a sense of peace and contentment. Even for the smallest of things – hot coffee, a green traffic light, a quiet moment before everyone wakes, these little nuggets of joy are all around us.

Sweetheart, re-centering your day is essential for maintaining balance (and sanity) in our hustle-bustle world. By consciously incorporating practices like deep breathing, mindfulness, physical activities, a digital detox, and making gratefulness a daily ritual, you can cultivate calm and sanity (yes, even on the craziest of days!). Remember, no one's going to prioritise self-care for you. You got this!

So, as the kids descend on you with their noise, questions and odd-looking craft projects, just remember to breathe.

Not Sure Where to Go Next?

If you're a slightly weird, socially-awkward, mentally-exhausted woman with ADHD, then you've found your place. You can pull up a chair and set-up camp right next to ours.

We plan to publish articles on many topics relating to our experiences with mother- and womanhood, ADHD, parenting, herbal remedies, meditation, yoga, and staying in tune with your purpose. It may be slowly, but hopefully weekly, between mom-life and full-time jobs; so thank you in advance for your patience.

So often we move in isolation, much like bears do. But bears come together, and as a parenting village, occasionally we do too. We hope you like it here and decide to stay for a bit.
